The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. Bereik en inhoud
Letter from Richard Clarke, Secretary, to Don Joachim José da Costa de Macedo, Secretary of Royal Academy of Sciences, Lisbon, regarding a text from the Portuguese historian, Diego de Conto, which is a translation of an inscription from the Elephanta Cave on an island near Bombay. It is suggested that the original inscription may be in the museum of Royal Asiatic Society, or in Lisbon or in some of the colleges of Coimbra. An impression or cast may be taken or alternatively a 'rubbing' of the inscription. (Found on page 139)
