Letter from Vincent Arthur Smith in Gorakhpur to William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore in which Smith finds Peppé's discoveries 'very interesting'. He hopes he will write a detailed account of his excavations with plans and photographs and asks him to survey the whole site. He warns Peppé that he must report his find officially. He believes the stupa to be 'of early date – anterior to the Christian era'. Continuing on 20 January, he adds that he is busy in court until 26 January but could come out to visit him by train on 27 January. Handwritten 8 sides, dated 19-20 January 1898.

Letter from Dr. Alois Anton Führer at Camp Kapilavastu to W. C. Peppé in Birdpore, in which Führer congratulates Peppé on his excavation and asks him to look for an inscription. He accepts Peppé's invitation to see the excavation but cannot get away 'even for a day' because of the damage the coolies would do to his own excavation work. He hopes to come on 15 February and offers to take over Peppé's excavation. Handwritten, 3 sides, dated 19 January 1898.

Note from William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore to Vincent Arthur Smith in Gorakhpur, in which Peppé tells Smith he has found some writing on one of the bowls, adds his transcription in pencil, under which is a transliteration in Smith's hand. On reverse is Smith's reply in which he writes that the relics appear to be those of the Buddha himself. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 19 January 1898.

Letter from Vincent Smith in Gorakhpur to William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore, in which Smith declares the find to be of 'even greater interest than we thought' and that the characters 'may be as early as B. C. 300'. Dates Buddha 'floruit' BC 500, Asoka BC 270. Smith continues in a postscript that the best book on Buddhism is a small book by Rhys Davids, and another is Hardy's Manual of Buddhism. Handwritten, 4 sides, dated 23 January 1898.

Letter from Dr. Alois Anton Führer in Camp to William Claxton Peppé at Birdpore, in which he acknowledges Peppé's plan of the excavation, photographs and copies of the inscription. He declares that the casket 'contains real relics of Lord Buddha' and is a 'great find'. Führer hopes to come to the excavation on 15 February when he will explore other mounds. He will be glad to see Peppé and Smith in his camp but warns them it is 'a trying ride' and he asks for notice of their arrival as he has difficulty getting provisions. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 24 January 1898.

Letter from Dr. Alois Anton Führer in Camp to William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore, in which he writes that he hopes to visit Piprahwakot on 22 February. At present he is excavating 'a very old lion temple . . . at the home of Buddha Gautama'. Führer gives directions for the excavation at Piprahwa and writes that he has found a bronze urn with an inscription. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 3 February 1898.

Draft of certification note from William Claxton Peppé to Pandit Misra, Collector of Basti. Written on a narrow oblong scrap of Government notepaper, apparently on the reverse of a note from the Officiating Collector, a draft in pencil in Peppé's writing certifying that 'these two jars' contain all the ashes found in the Piprahwas stupa with notes of witnesses. The end of the official letter is in ink. Handwritten, 2 sides, written after 21 February 1898 (the letter contains this date).

Letter from Dr. Alois Anton Führer in Camp Sagrawah to William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore, in which he writes that he is finishing his work and goes tomorrow to Lori Kudan to examine another Asoka pillar. He hopes to arrive at Piprawakot on Friday evening but regrets it is impossible for him to do any excavation work as he has to go to Khajnapore, but his draftsman will prepare drawings and take photographs, if Peppé will permit. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 23 February 1898.

Letter from Vincent Smith in Gorkhpur to William Claxton Peppé in Birdpore, in which Smith congratulates Peppé on his plans and inscription but goes on to say that he is compelled to retire earlier than planned. He explains that he has been insulted by being turned down for the Lucknow judicial bench. The Lieutenant-Governor has expressed his regret but Smith is determined to resign.
