The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Edwin Norris, Secretary, to Dr Alishan, Armenian Mekhitarist Society of St. Lazar, Venice, concerning a number of Journals sent by the Royal Asiatic Society to Venice which have gone astray. Dr Alishan is requested to give an alternative address to which they can be entrusted. The Royal Asiatic Society received a copy of the Society of St Lazar's 'General Geography' last November. If 'official thanks' have not been received, please accept them now for what is 'a large contribution to the literature of your country'. (Found on page 249)
