The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from E.V. Gibson, Secretary of Royal Asiatic Society, to announce the programme for the 160th Anniversary Celebrations on 10 March, 1983, with reply slip to indicate attendance. Typed material with Royal Asiatic Society letterhead, undated. Attached to the letter is a newspaper cutting from the Daily Telegraph to state that Professor Beckingham had given a lecture, before a reception to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Royal Asiatic Society at which D.J. Duncanson, President, had received guests including the Ambassador of Thailand, the Earl of Cranbrook, the Earl and Countess of Selkirk and Dr Michael Tweedie. Dated 11 March 1983.
