The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Five Letters:
- Letter from RAS Secretary to Professor E. Ullendorff to invite him, on behalf of the Council, to be a member of the Selection Committee for the Prize Essay Competition. Typed, 1 side, dated 21 June 1971. With the letter are two lists of the essays proposed. Both typed with handwritten annotations.
- Letter from Edward Ullendorff to Miss Crawford, RAS Secretary, to write that he would be glad to act as a member of the Selection Committee. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 side, dated 5 July 1971.
- Letter from RAS Secretary to Professor Ullendorff to inform him that a Committee of three had been nominated for the Competition, of himself, Dr Bivar and Professor Simmonds. Typed, 1 side, dated 19 October 1971.
- Letter from Edward Ullendorff to Miss Crawford, RAS Secretary, to ask if he could be excused from serving on the Committee due to a heavy workload. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 side, dated 25 October 1971.
- Letter from Diana Crawford, RAS Secretary to Professor Ullendorff to ask concerning a letter to the Ethiopian Ambassador and also whether he would clarify his position concerning the Prize Essay Selection Committee, Typed, 1 side, dated 5 November 1971.
