Biographical history

Adrian David Hugh Bivar, FRAS (1926 - 2015) was a British numismatist and archaeologist, who was Emeritus Professor of Iranian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He specialized in Sasanian seals and rock reliefs, Kushano-Sasanian coins and chronology, Mithraic iconography, Arsacid history and pre-Islamic folklore.

    In the Minutes of the Council Meeting for 10 June 1971, nine of the ten essay titles submitted for the Prize Essay competition were approved and the tenth was asked to create a more specific title. In the Minutes for 14 October 1971 a Selection Committee of Dr Bivar and Professors Simmonds and Ullendorf was approved. In the Minutes of 9 December 1971, it was noted that Professor Simmonds and Dr Bivar were agreed that the essay entitled, "British application of the Aryan theory of race to India" was the best but that it had been sent to Professor Ballhatchet as it was not their subject area. In the Minutes of 10 February 1972, it was noted that the Council agreed that the Essay Prize should be awarded to Mrs Joan Leopold and for the presentation to take place on 8th June.
    In the report of the Anniversary Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1973, p.197, it was reported that the Universities Prize Essay Competition had been awarded to Mrs Joan Leopold.
