Administrative history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

  • Letter from D.R.G. Beattie to (Mr)Crawford, RAS Secretary, to propose the title, "The Book of Ruth as a source of Early Israelite Law" for approval for the Essay Competition. Handwritten, 1 side, dated 31 May 1971.
  • Letter from D.R.G. Beattie to Miss Crawford, RAS Secretary, to inquire when he may know about the results of the Essay Competition. Typed with printed letterhead, 1 side, dated 1 November 1971.
  • Letter from Diana Crawford, RAS Secretary, to D.R.G. Beattie to inform him that she hoped that the results would be available sometime next month. Typed, 1 side, dated 5 November 1971.
  • Letter from RAS Secretary to D.R.G. Beattie to inform that his Essay had been unsuccessful in the Competition. Typed, 1 side, dated 4 February 1972.
