The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence concerned with the Journal sent and received in the 1950s and 1960s. These are:
- Correspondence concerning the publication of an article by the late Sir Ellis Minns on "Frozen Scythic Barrows". These include letters from [L.J] Lindgren to Sir Richard Winstedt, and William Watson, Assistant keeper, Department of Oriental Antiquities, British Museum, to Mrs Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society. Four letters, dated 7 June 1954 - 15 February 1957. The last letter is annotated with a note to state that Dr Lindgren had failed to complete the editing of the article and more recent articles had now superseded its relevance.
- Letter from R.M.S. Morrison to Sir Richard Winstedt to thank him for agreeing to put the paper, "On the beginnings of the Ismaili Dawat in Northern India" by Dr. Abbas H. al-Hamdani before the Editorial Committee for possible publication in the Journal, dated 2 February 1956. With the letter is an extract from a letter by Dr al-Hamdani that Morrison had received.
- Letter from H. Ellinton to the Royal Asiatic Society, to enquire whether the Society had published a report on the excavations carried out by Dr Viola Pettit, dated 8 January 1957.
- Letter from K.A.C. Creswell to Sir Richard Winstedt complaining about the lack of reviews of his publications, dated 12 September 1962.
- Letter from Edward Ullendorff to D.M. Lang to inform that after the Conference in July he would be in a position to know which of the Ethiopic material would be relevant for the Journal, dated 11 April 1963.
- Correspondence concerning the printing of the article "Etudes d'Orientalisme dédiées à la mémoire de Lévi-Provencal". Three items, dated 18 November - 11 December 1963.
- Correspondence concerning an article by Mr. M. Abir which was considered to Asiatic for the Journal of African History and a subsequent later revised publication in Les Annales. Nine items, dated 18 February 1964- 9 November 1965.
