Administrative history
The Malaysian Branch was founded at the Raffles Library, Singapore, in November 1877, as the Straits Asiatic Society. It applied for incorporation with the Royal Asiatic Society which was enacted the following year when it was renamed as the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. In 1964, it became the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. The Journal has been published since 1878.

Letter from Tan Sri Dato' Mubin Sheppard, Honorary Secretary of The Malaysian Branch of The Royal Asiatic Society, to Dr D.J. Duncanson, President of the Royal Asiatic Society, to report that the Council of the Society has nominated the Earl of Cranbrook and Dr. Michael Tweedie to represent the Society at the Royal Asiatic Society's 160th Anniversary celebrations. They will send a short message from their President and copies of their two latest monographs for the Library.
