The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Richard Clarke, Secretary, to James Cosmo Melvill, Secretary, East India Company, to send 40 copies of a paper by Mr Thomas, Bengal Civil Service, on 'Early Coins of Early Mohammedan Arabs' printed in the Journal of Royal Asiatic Society. Mr Thomas has been published before and any further publications by him would be welcome. Also Clarke thanks for an interesting paper transmitted by the East India Company on the 'discovery and present condition of the Arabic Library of the former sovereigns of the Adil Shahi race at Bijapur'. A copy of a Mr Frere's catalogue is also requested on its receipt by the East India Company. (Found on page 125)
