The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Professor Ballhatchet, Director of Royal Asiatic Society, to Professor Simon to inform him of the decision of the Council to award him the Society's Gold Medal in recognition of his contribution to Chinese Studies. He also writes that it is customary for the recipient to give a lecture at the presentation and suggests either the General Meeting in October or the Anniversary Meeting in May for the occasion. Typed, dated 20 January 1977. Also the reply from Professor Simon to Bullhatchet, expressing his honour in receiving the award and suggesting a title for his lecture. Handwritten, dated 26 January 1977.
