              Correspondence between the Royal Asiatic Society and Fine Books Oriental concerning a catalogue for the offprints of the Society's Journal. The file contains both agreements and correspondence between the two parties as well as internal communication within the Royal Asiatic Society and administrative documents concerning preparation for a launch party for the catalogue. The correspondents include Valery Gibson and Gordon Calver for the Royal Asiatic Society and J.I. Somers for Fine Books Oriental. During this period Fine Books Oriental came under the Luzac's umbrella but continued to act independently.

              Material relating to transliteration schemes

              Material concerning the transliteration of scripts for use in the Journal. In early 1920s, an enquiry regarding the discrepancies in the system of transliteration published in the Journal prompted the Council's decision to form a committee looking into the matter. During the 1930s there was further concern regarding the printing of non-Latin alphabet scripts. The material includes:

              • Printed report of the Committee on Transliteration appointed by the Council on 17 January 1922, submitted by the Committee chair Sir George A. Grierson and members Dr T. Grahame Bailey, A. G. Ellis and Dr M. Gaster. The report recommends some optional signs as substitutes of the Geneva transliteration for Sanskrit, Arabic and Hindu scripts. 2 copies.
              • Correspondence concerning the transliteration of Tibetan. The main correspondents are F.W. Thomas, H.W. Bailey, D.S. Margoliouth and Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society. 16 pieces, dated 20 October 1937 - 31 October 1938.
              • Correspondence concerning the transliteration of Chinese and Japanese script. The main correspondents are W. Perceval Yetts, S. Yoshutake, Sir Harold Parlett and Colonel Hoysted. 16 pieces, dated 26 July 1938- 1 December 1938.
              • Correspondence and administrative documents concerning transliteration of all scripts. The main correspondents are the Deutsche Morgenlandische Gesellschaft, W. Perceval Yetts and Colonel Hoysted. 11 items, dated 11 January 1939 - 10 November 1939.

              Article Reprint Requests and Author Permissions

              Correspondence concerned with seeking permission for articles originally published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society to be reprinted in other publications. There are seven examples of requests from individuals and institutions. On the converse, requests are made from Journal authors to other institutions for permission to use images within their article. There are three examples of these.

              A small amount of 19th century correspondence concerned with the Journal remains. These are:

              • 'Some remarks on reading Lt. Col. Colebrooke's papers relating to Ceylon' - a critique of a paper submitted by Lt. Col. Colebrooke, unknown author, undated.
              • Correspondence from J.W. Bosanquet to Edwin Norris concerning a paper he is submitting, two letters, dated 29 October 1858 and 2 November 1858. Also a letter from H.H. Wilson to Edwin Norris to state there would be no objection to Bosanquet's paper being included, dated 27 [August 1859]. The article was published in the Journal in 1860.
              • Correspondence from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Edwin Norris and J.W. Redhouse concerning the publication of papers he had sent. Four Handwritten letters dated 18 January 1861, 19 January 1861, 16 February 1861 and 19 February 1861. Hodgson first deems the material not worth printing, then reconsiders and offers and sends £10 towards the cost. There is a further letter from R. Spence Hardy considering that the material may well be of interest if it does not overlap that of Gutzlaff's printed in 'Miscellaneous Translations from Oriental Languages'. Handwritten, dated 20 May 1861. The article appeared in JRAS 18 (1861), "Notice on Buddhist Symbols" pp.393-399.
              • Correspondence from J.E. Hall to J.W. Redhouse concerning a paper he is writing on an inscription and how ill-health has slowed the process. Two letters, dated 18 July [1863] and 17 August 1863.
              • Letter from Henry Cope, Secretary of the Agri-Horticultural Society of the Punjab, requesting a copy of the paper written by Professor Medlicott to be translated into the local languages, dated 22 January 1863.
              • Letter from Professor P. Petersen to Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot responding to criticism of his article by Mr Fleet, dated 14 October 1892.
