              These Papers contain a single item entitled: "A Translation of the Standard inscription, and of the great slab, or Altar, found in the ruins of Nimrud by Captain Ormsby, Indian Navy". The translation is contained with a soft-cover notebook which gives details of the inscriptions. The notebook has a marbled cover which has come loose from the pages.

              Correspondence and Papers written by Captain Thomas John Newbold between 1842 and 1849. The majority of the correspondence is from Newbold to Richard Clarke, the Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society. The Papers were mainly sent by Newbold to be read at the Society or published in its Journal.

              "Ancient Inscriptions in Syria and Arabia Copied by Capt Newbold". A paper with copies of inscriptions and hieroglyphs from Newbold's expedition in Syria. This is undated but from the lists in TJN/2/7 it would appear that it was sent to, but not read at, the Royal Asiatic Society in 1849. With the papers is a label which states, "Ancient Inscriptions in Syria. Copied by Capt. Newbold."

              "Proofs of Facsimile of the Naqsh-i Rastan Inscription published in the Indian Antiquary corrected by EW West". Four pages of proofs plus a tracing of "Ten Pahlavi signatures appended to copperplate Grant to a Syrian Church in Southern India of probably the first half of the ninth century A.D.". All within a blue paper folder with the title handwritten on it.
