Two carbon copy letterbooks of Oscar Eckenstein’s copies of correspondence with N.M. Penzer:

(a) [March 1920] to 21 July 1920, (b) 24 July 1920 to 18 December 1920.

The latter book also contains a letter from Penzer’s solicitor to Eckenstein dated 17th December 1920 threatening legal action because of Eckenstein’s refusal to proceed with the sale of his Burton collection to Penzer, and one from Eckenstein’s solicitor to Eckenstein dated 23rd December 1920 discussing the possibility of a settlement. (The record of the correspondence between Penzer and Eckenstein breaks off at this point. Eckenstein died April 8 1921).

There is also a letter from Margery Cham to Lewis C. Loyd, from “The Cave, Oving" (Eckenstein’s former home), dated 8 December 1922, saying that she was sending all that she could find of copies of Eckenstein’s letters to Penzer.

Letter from Colonel Hoysted to Lewis C. Loyd to thank him for his letter and the description he sent. He also explains that cataloguing the material has been delayed as the Assistant Librarian has to undergo an operation. Typed, dated 16 February 1939.

This material is supplementary to the Personal Papers. It consists of a typed copy of a talk on Richard Burton by C. E. J. Whitting (1958), 2 versions of a talk/article for the Royal Commonwealth Society by D.Dean concerning Oscar Eckenstein (1959), and a list of all the Burton Material held by the Royal Asiatic Society, created by C. E. J. Whitting in 1972.

Letter from Bertram Thomas to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary of Royal Asiatic Society, with which he sends his lecture (not present) but writes that he is unable to check the proofs as he will be leaving the country for some months. He has send a copy to Professor Margoliouth who chaired the evening and presented the medal to Thomas, who will make any necessary revisions.
