'A copy of the Report from the Madras Government to the Court of Directors on the importance of the Study of Sanscrit (Sanskrit) and the vernacular languages of the South of India to their civil servants. Dated January 1812. Also other documents relating to the same object.' This description is written on the internal front cover. Documents include:

  • 'Extract Public Letter from Fort St George, Dated 10th January 1812'
  • 'Extract Fort St. George Consultations in the General, Commercial and Law Departments dated the 10th December 1811'

These reports include findings of the committee set up to investigate the effectiveness of the teaching of languages and include letters from W. Thackeray, D. Hill and named Committee members.

This is a leather bound volume with pages numbered from 143 to 300 containing handwritten commentaries relating to India and Russia in 1830, described on the introductory pages as follows:

  • Sir John McDonald's observations of Col. Evans work on The Invasion of India pp 143-216.
  • Sir John Malcolm's notes on Col. Evans and Sir John McDonald's remarks, pp 217-230.
  • Memoir of the NW Frontier taken from Public records by Capt/now Major/ Bonamy showing the Importance of the River Indus as connected with its defence, pp 231-300.
  • Included in the volume is a newspaper cutting, dated April 1840, about a Russian expedition against China.

Sinhala - English dictionary

Two manuscript versions of a Sinhala-English dictionary, one of 241 pages and the other of 214 pages on foolscap paper. There are also some supplementary pages and some index pages associated with these manuscripts. The date of writing of these manuscripts is unknown but from the paper and ink they would appear to have been undertaken in the early to mid twentieth century. Both manuscripts are in the same hand.

Papers of Ram Raz

The Papers of Ram Raz contain an incomplete draft of his Essay on the Architecture of the Hindus with an associated letter from H.H. Wilson to Captain Harkness, Royal Asiatic Society. The papers also contain a 'Translation of a Hukamnamah or a Code of Rules enacted by the late Tippoo Sultan, the Sovereign of Mysore for the conduct of his Amilders'.

An Eastern Odyssey

Programme of the Gala Performance of the film 'An Eastern Odyssey' held in the presence of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in aid of the Royal National Life-boat Institution (RNLI) at the Plaza Theatre, London, on 13 November 1934. This is a printed programme with a message from the Prince, information concerning the Citroën Trans-Asiatic Expedition and details of the film, An Eastern Odyssey, made as a record of the expedition. The final page of the programme lists Patrons of the RNLI and the Committee of the Gala performance.

With the programme is a ticket for the Royal Circle, Seat C9, at the Plaza Theatre and a card giving notification of the dress code for the evening.

Catalogues and Lists of Asiatic Material

Within the Royal Asiatic Society collections are several lists and catalogues relating to Asiatic material which are not part of the Society's own collections. These have been gathered within this catalogue. They are:

  • 'A Catalogue of Indian Idols, Indian Paintings, Drawings, &c. which were collected by Mr. Simpson, during a long Residence in India in the Company's Service. Which will be Sold by Auction by Mr. Christie, at his Great Room, in Pall Mall, On Saturday, May the 26th, 1792, at Twelve O'clock.' This is a photocopy of the original document.
  • 'List of Oriental Works purchased at Erzerum, translated from the St Petersburg Journal of Dec 20 1829/ Jan 9 1830' - handwritten list.
  • 'Catalogue of moghrebine arabic Manuscripts in the possession of Jakob Graberg of Hemso' - handwritten, dated Florence, 26 April 1830.
  • 'Sale of Dr. A. Clarke's Library: Desirable for the R.A.S.' - handwritten list, undated.
  • 'Catalogue of Malayan Book's by Thomas Beighton - handwritten list, undated.
  • 'List of the Principal Budhistical works from the Pali in Chinese character by Mt Gutzlaff' - handwritten, dated 1845.
  • 'A List of the Oriental Coins preserved in the British Museum, B. Dorn' - handwritten list, undated.
  • 'Catalogue of Malay books the property of Inchi Mahomed' - handwritten list, undated.
  • 'Catalogue of the Chinese Library of University College, London' - handwritten volume, dated to 1885.
  • 'List of lithographed Malay texts in the alphabetical catalogue of Leiden University Library under Kikayat and Shair' - handwritten list, 2 sides, undated, post 1900.
  • Lists of Indonesian Manuscripts compiled by Petrus Voorhoeve between 1950 and 1954. These are: 'Some notes on Indonesian MSS in the Bodleian Library, Oxford'; 'List of Indonesian Manuscripts in the University Library, Cambridge'; 'List of Indonesian manuscripts in India Office Library, Commonwealth Relations Office, London'; List of Indonesian Manuscripts in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London'; 'Indonesian Manuscripts in the British Museum'. These are typed with some handwritten annotations, 51 pieces.

Sheet of blue card with the dedication: "To the Right Honorable C.W.W.Wynne, President, and to the Members of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain, This Representation of a Magnificent Indian Golden Medal or Coin (of 70 oz wt), Taken from a richly Gilt Copper Facsimile of the Original is most respectfully Inscribed by their obedient servant Wm Yule, Major E.I.C." The card measures 56cm by 44cm and is dated Edinburgh, 1st May, 1834. Besides the dedication the card bears details of the inscriptions on both observe and reverse sides of the coin, with equivalent English translation and Romanised Arabic. The coin was cast in the reign of Shah Jahan I, A.H. 1064 (1653).

Please note, the card has suffered water damage and is in a fragile condition.

Fragment of the epic poem, Valmiki Ramayana, in Kanarese - Cantos 3-5. The poem is written in ink in Kanarese with a pencil annotation in English identifying the manuscript.

'Translation of the Emperor of China's Letter to the King of England from the original Chinese'. A translation of the letter sent to George III from the Emperor of China after the Amherst Embassy in 1816. The letter is dated 11 September 1816 and this translation was given to the Society by Lord Auckland in 1827. The letter complains about the behaviour of the ambassadors sent and orders no further ambassador to come. The emperor has no wish to trade.
