Research notes for possible stories and concerning Graham's motivation for writing.
Graham Angus Charles 1919-1991Storey made many notes in his lifetime of research. Some have been catalogued within the Persian Literature Volumes. This series contains those that have not been assigned to any of the individual volumes.
These are:
- Bibliographical research notes - handwritten notes similar to the volume entries. Some have indications that they may have been used in the volumes but they have not been specifically ordered as volume entries.
- Notebook without cover with notes in Arabic from the 'Home Services Miscellany' - this notebook has suffered from water damage.
- Notes on periodicals - handwritten.
- 'Arabic lexicographical notes' - handwritten, title according to label within original file.
- 'Lexicographical notes - Persian I' - handwritten, title according to label within original file.
- Research notes in Arabic and English notes on manuscript pages, annotations and miniatures, handwritten.
- Research notes on 'Philologika' by Von Hellmut Ritter and other publications concerning Ansani, The Suhrawardiyya, 'Ain al-qudat, Kubra, and Najm al-Din Dajah, handwritten.
- Lists for the contents of MSS Eur. A.11; Persian manuscript titles, listed by size; Contents of the Persian Delhi Manuscripts, Volume III; A handlist of Arabic Printed Works divided by size; and 'Additions'. These are all typed lists. It is unknown which institution's lists from where these have been taken.
- A large bound notebook containing notes on Course in Bengal Madrassas; Courses at Panjab University; Prospectus of Studies and Examinations for the indigenous Arabic Schools of the United Provinces, 1911; Books Studied in al_Jami al-Azhan; Courses at Deoband. Also within this book are pressed flowers many of which are labelled. Several of these have also come loose and have been placed with a separate folder for safekeeping with loose labels. Inserted within the front cover are some handwritten notes, a copy of a letter from Professor Browne on Persian research, a news cutting - 'Baronet in the Dock: Extraordinary Allegations' and a sheet of a Persian newspaper.
- Large exercise book with covers missing containing notes in Arabic and English on Arabic texts. Inserted within the book are 2 printed sheets advertising a Seminar for the Comparative Study of Religions at the College, Baroda.
- Small bound exercise book with the title 'Rough Index to PL (Persian Literature)' with the annotation 'Get a large notebook for use as index'. This index is arranged alphabetically. Inserted into the notebook is a single sheet headed 'Proverbs not Indexed'. Index is in English but this list in Arabic script.
- Two pocket notebooks, one with a red cover and one unbound containing mixed research notes in Arabic and English.
- Shelf Lists of the Storey Collections of Printed Books and Persian Manuscripts - typed lists.
- Manuscript location/Index lists for catalogues - these probably belong to a volume of Persian Literature but it was not possible to identify them, handwritten.
- Seven pieces of miscellaneous notes, typed and handwritten.
Information collated about the collections from the early history of the Society:
- Information concerning RAS Persian Manuscript 258 Gulistan of Sa'di. Handwritten and typed, 3 pieces, undated.
- 'Memo' - index of contents of an unknown [Thai] manuscript or book about Buddhism and the Siam court. Handwritten, 1 piece, undated.
- '[Kalunelle Wieharre]' - a list of manuscripts or index for a manuscript concerning Buddhism including some of the jatakas. Handwritten, 1 piece, undated.
- 'No' - an index for a manuscript found within Raffles Malay Manuscript 3 but not pertaining to it but to a manuscript written by different hands in the Marwari dialect and chiefly of Jain poems, possibly relating to Tod Ms.106. Handwritten, 4 sides, undated.
- 'An attempt to identify the Indian artist who painted a picture of Jahangir's Court' - an article by Henry Beveridge identifying the artist and the people portrayed in a watercolour painting of Jahangir and his courtiers donated to the Royal Asiatic Society by Major Charles Stewart, 5 July 1834, having been brought to England by Colonel Champion in 1775 and cleaned and regilded by Vaux in November 1880. Handwritten, 23 pages, dated 20 June 1915. The picture is no longer in the collections. Though written about in Foster's article The Pictures, etc., of the Royal Asiatic Society, (J.R.A.S. 1924) it was recorded as missing by the 1970 in the Society's guard books.
- Translation of the full-size copy of the Inscription to the Taula of Hafiz in Shiraz - handwritten, 2 pieces, [1929].
Letter from Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to Mrs Tania Foster-Brown, Archivist, Aspreys, to state that in preparation for the Society's 175 year anniversary, he is researching the Society's premises at Albemarle Street and wondered if Aspreys held any records of the building whilst the Society was a tenant. With this letter is a compliment slip from Tania Foster-Brown and a black and white photograph of 22 Albemarle Street, mounted on board, dating to the 1970s.

Graham Angus Charles 1919-1991Sheet of blue card with the dedication: "To the Right Honorable C.W.W.Wynne, President, and to the Members of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain, This Representation of a Magnificent Indian Golden Medal or Coin (of 70 oz wt), Taken from a richly Gilt Copper Facsimile of the Original is most respectfully Inscribed by their obedient servant Wm Yule, Major E.I.C." The card measures 56cm by 44cm and is dated Edinburgh, 1st May, 1834. Besides the dedication the card bears details of the inscriptions on both observe and reverse sides of the coin, with equivalent English translation and Romanised Arabic. The coin was cast in the reign of Shah Jahan I, A.H. 1064 (1653).
Please note, the card has suffered water damage and is in a fragile condition.
