Drafts of papers delivered at General Meetings of the Society. These are:

  • 'Translation of a Chinese Inscription found on a Rock at Kulangsu (Gulangyu)' by George Tradescant Lay, read at the General Meeting, 15 November 1845, 14 pages + paper wrapper.
  • Paper on the cultivation of cotton and sugar by William McClelland, read 7 November 1846, with accompanying letter from W. Corgill, dated 18 May 1846, 17 pages.
  • Notes on the progress of the native printing press in India, with reference to a list of periodicals and other works printed at the presses of Delhi and Bareilly with the list and translation by John Dowson. Read By H.H. Wilson, 2 December 1848, 23 pages.
  • Notes on the Ruins at Gwalior by Lieutenant Thomas Briggs, read 20 November 1852 when Briggs showed a volume of drawings of the architecture of the temples visited by him at Gwalior and Badami, 8 pages + paper wrapper.
  • Paper relating to the use by the Chinese government of the Chinese word for barbarian, read by Edwin Norris from documents communicated by the Foreign Office, 4 December 1852, 13 pieces + paper wrapper.
  • Notes on the low caste Mangs of Kolhapoor (Kolhapur); an extract of a report by Lieutenant C. Barr, dated 1 January 1852. This was communicated by Colonel Sykes and read 4th June 1853, printed 10 pages.
  • Extracts from letters received from Colonel Henry Rawlinson concerning the kings cited in an inscription. Two pieces, undated but probably dating to 1852-4 when the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society read several such extracts at the General Meetings.
  • Description of the Drawings of Buddha and a Pagoda, presented to the Society by the First King of Siam (Thailand) on 23 July 1857. The original description is dated 26 May 1854. The paper was read by the President, H.H. Wilson, at the meeting of 2 January 1858, 8 pages.
  • Paper entitled 'A Sketch of Buddhist mythology as represented in Chinese sheet-tract' read by Joseph Edkins, 22 January 1859, 7 pages.
  • Papers relating to the inscriptions on two swords given to the Queen by the widow of Major Hodson, but displayed at the Royal Asiatic Society on 6 April 1861, 5 pieces.

Papers of Ram Raz

The Papers of Ram Raz contain an incomplete draft of his Essay on the Architecture of the Hindus with an associated letter from H.H. Wilson to Captain Harkness, Royal Asiatic Society. The papers also contain a 'Translation of a Hukamnamah or a Code of Rules enacted by the late Tippoo Sultan, the Sovereign of Mysore for the conduct of his Amilders'.

The original draft of 'Essay on the architecture of the Hindús' written by Ram Raz. The draft is incomplete beginning at page 13. With the draft is a letter from Horace Hayamn Wilson to Captain Henry Harkness, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, in which Wilson thanks Harkness for sending a note written by Ram Raz concerning the date of the foundation of the Pandyan monarchy. Hayman is not convinced by Ram Raz's argument. This is dated 1 September 1835.

A manuscript of the 'Analytical Account of the Pancha Tantra illustrated with occasional Translation by H.H. Wilson, Surgeon on the Bengal Establishment, Secretary to the Asiatic Society of Bengal and Member of the Asiatic Societies of London and Paris'. A further note on the opening page records that this manuscript was read at the General Meetings of the Royal Asiatic Society on 15 May and 5 June 1824. It was subsequently published in the Transactions of the Society.

This is a handwritten manuscript giving an account of the Panchatantra, the ancient Indian collection of animal fables in Sanskrit verse and prose, arranged within a frame story. The manuscript bears considerable annotation by both Wilson and another hand, probably that of Henry Thomas Colebrooke. There is also a Note appended to the end of the manuscript by Colebrooke. The manuscript is contained within a unlined notebook 32 x 20 cm, of which the front cover is missing.

'Copy of Correspondence between the Secretary to the Bengal Government and H.H. Wilson Esquire relative to the appropriation of the allowance of the late Col. Wilford of Rs.1218 per month for the purpose of forming an Establishment in India for the prosecution of Researches into the Literature, History etc. of the Hindus'. This correspondence comprises of:

  • Letter from H.H. Wilson to the Marquis of Hastings in which he enquires whether the allowance originally granted to the late Lieutenant Colonel Wilford for his enquiries into the Literature, Antiquity, Religion and History of the Hindus may be continued to be used for further study by other of the Company's servants. He sets out possible conditions around the use of the money. Dated 11 December 1822, 3 sides.
  • Letter from C. Lushington, Acting Chief Secretary to the Government, to H.H. Wilson in which he replies on behalf of the Governor General to the effect that the Governor General is in agreement with Wilson's proposal and asks that Wilson himself will provide the appropriate detail as to how to form an Establishment for Hindu studies. Dated 31 December 1822, 1.2 sides.
  • Letter from H.H. Wilson to C. Lushington in which he provides the details of his thoughts on creating an Establishment and his opinion of the necessity for the study of Sanskrit works. He gives a breakdown of how the allowance might be spent and also reflects that the Establishment of the late Colonel Mackenzie might also be combined with the one he is proposing. Dated 20 January 1823, 7 sides.
  • Extract of a letter from the Chief Secretary to H.H. Wilson in which he informs that Wilson's arrangements have been sanctioned by the Government. Dated 30 January 1823, 0.3 sides.

The final page of the document bears the title of the document and the dates of the first and last letter. It also bears the stamp of the Royal Asiatic Society and the details of the presentation by Doyle.

A small amount of 19th century correspondence concerned with the Journal remains. These are:

  • 'Some remarks on reading Lt. Col. Colebrooke's papers relating to Ceylon' - a critique of a paper submitted by Lt. Col. Colebrooke, unknown author, undated.
  • Correspondence from J.W. Bosanquet to Edwin Norris concerning a paper he is submitting, two letters, dated 29 October 1858 and 2 November 1858. Also a letter from H.H. Wilson to Edwin Norris to state there would be no objection to Bosanquet's paper being included, dated 27 [August 1859]. The article was published in the Journal in 1860.
  • Correspondence from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Edwin Norris and J.W. Redhouse concerning the publication of papers he had sent. Four Handwritten letters dated 18 January 1861, 19 January 1861, 16 February 1861 and 19 February 1861. Hodgson first deems the material not worth printing, then reconsiders and offers and sends £10 towards the cost. There is a further letter from R. Spence Hardy considering that the material may well be of interest if it does not overlap that of Gutzlaff's printed in 'Miscellaneous Translations from Oriental Languages'. Handwritten, dated 20 May 1861. The article appeared in JRAS 18 (1861), "Notice on Buddhist Symbols" pp.393-399.
  • Correspondence from J.E. Hall to J.W. Redhouse concerning a paper he is writing on an inscription and how ill-health has slowed the process. Two letters, dated 18 July [1863] and 17 August 1863. Letter from Henry Cope, Secretary of the Agri-Horticultural Society of the Punjab, requesting a copy of the paper written by Professor Medlicott to be translated into the local languages, dated 22 January 1863.
  • Letter from Professor P. Petersen to Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot responding to criticism of his article by Mr Fleet, dated 14 October 1892.

A manuscript of an 'Abstract Translation of an Inscription on Copper Plates found in the Fort of Miruj. Dated saka 946, or A.D. 1025' by Mr Wathen. This is annotated by H.H. Wilson. A copy of the inscription is also with the translation. This particular translation was published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1836 (2), pp.258-271. An explanatory article of William Henry Wathen's work on inscriptions in India was published in JRAS 1835, pp.378-399 and includes remarks by Horace Hayman Wilson.
