The papers consist of correspondence mainly concerned with Pankhurst's interest and research into Ethiopia, a small amount of printed material, photographs, and Abstracts and Papers from the First International Conference on the History of Ethiopian Art which was convened by Pankhurst in 1986.

Correspondence concerning regiments in the Indian Army.

• Letter from Brigadier V. Madan, Military Adviser's Unit, The High Commission of India, to Richard Pankhurst to send a list of the Corps and Units in India in 1867-68 and their current title. The list is with the letter. Three pieces, dated 8 September 1982.
• Letter from Major J.M.A. Tamplin, Army Museums, Ogilby Trust, to Richard Pankhurst to supply information about the Regiments of the Indian Army. His information is not with the letter. One piece, dated 10 September 1982.

Correspondence concerning the preparation of the translation of the Goğğam chronicle.

• Letter from John O. Hunwick, Department of History, Northwestern University College of Arts and Sciences, Illinois, USA, to Richard Pankhurst to reply to Pankhurst's letter concerning the preparation of the translation of the 'Gojam Chronicle' (The Goğğam chronicle). Dated 23 October 1983.
• Letter from Professor P.M. Holt, Chairman, Fontes Historiae Africanae Committee, The British Academy, to Richard Pankhurst concerning possibly finding another collaborator to undertake the translation. Dated 18 November 1983.

Letter from P[av] Hodgson to Richard Pankhurst to reply to Pankhurst's letters and inform that they have no information concerning Theodore Bent's Ethiopian Expedition (1893). Hodgson had consulted Mabel Bent's diaries but the Ethiopia ones were missing. They suggest other possible sources of information.

Correspondence concerning the location of archives connected to James Bruce, Scottish traveller and travel writer who confirmed the source of the Blue Nile. These are:

• Letter from S.R. Tomlinson, Assistant Librarian, Department of Western Manuscripts, Bodleian Library, Oxford, to Richard Pankhurst to give details of some letters from James Bruce in their collections. One piece, dated 26 February 1981.
• Letter from J.G. Parker, Research Assistant, The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, to Richard Pankhurst concerning the letters and papers of James Bruce in their collection. One piece, dated 25 February 1981.
• Letter from the Hon. Jane Roberts, Royal Library, Windsor Castle, to Richard Pankhurst concerning the drawings by James Bruce in the Library's collections. She includes copies of the frontispiece of the catalogue, 'English Drawings Stuart and Georgian periods in the Collection of His Majesty to King at Windsor Castle' by A.P. Oppé and the relevant page concerning the Bruce material. Three pieces, dated 12 March 1981.
