              Correspondence concerning the India Office Library. These are:

              • Letter from D.T. Monteath, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him of the Committee set up under his chairmanship to decide what should be done with the building and contents of the India Office. He informs that the Society may present their views on the matter. He discusses the contents and the possible options for their disposal. Typed, dated 16 January 1948.
              • Letter from J. Butt, Royal Central Asian Society, to Richard Winstedt, Royal Asiatic Society, writing about the letter from Monteath and sending a copy of the views from the Royal Central Asian Society. Typed, dated 6 February 1948. The report is with the letter.
              • Letter from David Monteath, Commonwealth Relations Office, to R.E. Enthoven to thank for his letter concerning the future of the contents of the India Office. He assures that it is his intention to consult with the Royal Asiatic Society. He also seeks to answer Enthoven's specific question about the Records and Library. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 18 February 1948.
              • Letter from L.D. Barnett, British Museum, to Richard Winstedt to thank him for showing the letters concerning the India Office and to express his opinion about them remaining in Britain. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 25 February 1948.
              • Copy of a letter from the Chairman of Council, Royal Central Asian Society, to Sir David Monteath regarding the India Office contents. Typed, dated 29 February 1948.

Brown, East India Association, to Mrs Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that their Council has given much time to considering the letter by Sir David Monteath and recommending the matter be brought before the Royal Asiatic Society's Council. With this letter is one from the East India Association to Sir David Monteath expressing their views on his letter concerning the future of the India Office and its contents. Duncan Sandys, Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, to express the concern felt by the Council of the Society over press statements regarding possible transfer of the contents of the India Office Library to India and Pakistan.
