The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

In 1993 the first Denis Sinor Medal was awarded to Professor Sir Harold Bailey. The award was presented to him in Cambridge on 19 May 1993 by the President of the Society. The archival material contains correspondence and administrative documents concerning the award.

These are:

  • Letter from Lydia Collins, RAS Secretary, to Sir Harold Bailey to inform him that the Society's committee for the award of the Denis Sinor Medal had recommended him for the award of the Medal in 1993. She asks whether he would accept the Medal and whether he could attend a Meeting of the Society to receive it. Typed, 1 piece, dated 12 February 1993.
  • Letter from A.D.H. Bivar, RAS President, to Dr Bridget Allchin concerning the award of the Medal to Sir Harold Bailey. As Bailey was unable to travel to London he asks whether the Ancient India and Iran Trust would host the event. Typed, 1 piece, dated 25 February 1993.
  • Letter from Bridget Allchin, Ancient India and Iran Trust, to A.D.H. Bivar suggesting a tea party in May or June for the presentation of the award and giving the capacity for guests on the occasion. Typed, 1 piece, dated 1 March 1993.
  • Letter from Sir Harold Bailey to The Secretary, RAS, to say that A.D.H. Bivar had telephoned him and was making arrangements with the Ancient India and Iran Trust. Handwritten, 1 piece, dated 2 March 1993.
