The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Signed Minutes of the Finance Committee from 18 April 1985-11 May 1988, and from 19 March 1992-27 May 2004. These are contained with a black hardcover notebook with label "Finance Committee". Also a small amount of correspondence pertinent to the Committee. These are:
- Letter from James [Selwyn] to Denis Duncanson to send his calculations concerning the cost of a possible move to Queen's Gardens, dated 31 March 1997.
- Letter from J.A. Payne to Dr MacDowell to inform him that at the recent Council Meeting it was suggested that a Finance Committee be formed and that he had taken the liberty of suggesting MacDowell, dated 2 March 1992.
