Administrative history
The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Estimates for production of letters regarding reviewing books for the Journal, typed and handwritten material, dated 2 April 1931 to 5th May 1931. These are:
- Pro forma letter from the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, asking for an estimate for 1000 copies of the letter typed beneath, undated.
- Letter from Stephen Austin and Sons, Ltd. to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society to send an estimate for the letters requested. The estimate is with the letter. Dated 2 April 1931.
- Estimate from Barnard & Crannis, Ltd. to the Royal Asiatic Society for 1000 letters, dated 2 April 1931.
- Estimate from Gale & Polden Ltd. for 1000 letters, dated 10 April 1931.
- Letter from the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Bernard and Crannis Ltd. to ask whether their estimate includes the cost of a heading, dated 4 May 1931.
- Two further copies of the proforma letter asking for estimates. One is annotated with 'Ordered by phone 5.5.31' and a sketch of the required heading. The other is annotated with a list of the companies asked for estimates and their comparative prices.
- A copy of the printed letter.
