Institutionele geschiedenis

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence concerning the first session of the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. These are:

  • Letter from T.A. Joyce, Chairman, and John L. Myres and Alan H. Brodrick, Honorary Secretaries, International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, to The President, Royal Asiatic Society, to invite him to the be one of the Vice-Presidents for the first session of the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Dated 4 July 1933.
  • Letter from John Myres, Honorary Secretary, International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, to The Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society to inquire as to why there had been no reply from the President, as they wished to print a list of the Vice-Presidents. Undated.
  • Letter from E.D. Maclagan, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to send his reply to the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. He writes about his successful fishing. Dated 18 July 1933.
  • Letter from E.D. Maclagan, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to John Myres to apologise for his tardy reply and to state that the President of the Society would be happy to be a Vice-President at the Congress, though as his Presidency would finish in May, it would be the next President that undertook the role. Dated 18 July 1933.
  • Letter on behalf of H.G. Beasley, International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank him for sending a list of the Fellows of the Royal Asiatic Society. Dated 9 July 1934.
  • Letter from the Earl of Onslow, President, International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, to The Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to send his thanks for the Society's support of the Congress. Dated 9 October 1934.
