The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Dr Chandan Roy Chaudhuri, General Secretary, Asiatic Society, to Dr M.D. McDowell, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to give information of a possible research collaboration that will benefit the Asiatic Society, and to inform of his forthcoming visit to London when he hoped to meet with Dr McDowell. Dated 7 March 1995.
Letter from Michael Coyne, British Council, to Dr M.D. McDowell, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform of the need to arrange a programme of visits for Dr Roy Chaudhuri's visit. With the letter is an enclosed visitors note giving details of purpose and aims of the visit. Dated 30 March 1995.
Letter from Dr M.D.. McDowell, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Dr Chandan Roy Chaudhuri, General Secretary, Asiatic Society, to express his regret at Dr Roy Chaudhuri's illness that prevented him from visiting the Royal Asiatic Society. McDowell hopes that the Societies will be able to establish a closer collaboration. Dated 28 April 1995.
