The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence with the Asiatic Society of Japan concerning the sesquicentenary celebrations. These are:
- Letter from President, Royal Asiatic Society, to President, Asiatic Society of Japan, to inform about the sesquicentenary of the Society and to invite members of the Japan Society in London at the time to be part of the celebrations, dated 21 April 1971.
- Letter from President, Asiatic Society of Japan, to President, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank for the previous letter and to inform that it will be the Japan's Society's centenary in 1972 and to extend a similar invitation to members of the Royal Asiatic Society, dated 23 June 1971.
- Letter from R.H. Wade, President of Asiatic Society of Japan, to B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to send his personal note with the official letter and to write about his recent visit to Korea, dated 7 July 1971.
