The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

2002
16-17 November: Farid Al-din 'Attar and the Persian Sufi Tradition Conference, held at the Brunei Gallery Auditorium, SOAS, organised by the Iran heritage Foundation, the centre for near and Middle Eastern Studies and the Institute of Ismaili Studies, with sponsorship from the British Academy, the British Council and the Royal Asiatic Society.

29 November: South Asia Archive and Library Group 68th Conference, held in the Royal Asiatic Society Library.

10 September: Charles Boxer Centenary Conference. This conference was held at King's College, London, followed by a reception at the Royal Asiatic Society.
