The Minutes of the Council Meeting for 1 July 1958 report that is was resolved to use the same subjects for the Essay prize as selected the previous year and in the Minutes for 9th April 1959, it was recorded that the Prize Essay was awarded to Mr J.L. Young of Leeds University. In the report of the Anniversary Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, (1959), p.191, it was also reported that the Prize Essay had been won by Mr J.L. Young of Leeds University.
