The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

There is little material relating to the early Anniversary General Meetings. The items within the archive are:
- 'Proceedings of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland: Anniversary Meetings and Annual Reports of the Council, 1838 and 1839' - a printed pamphlet created by Harrison and Co., St. Martin's Lane, London.
- Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland: Anniversary Meeting and Twenty-Second Annual Report of the Council, 1845, also printed by Harrison and Co.
- 'The Royal Asiatic Society: A Year of Progress': an article from the Times of India, 1 June 1903, reporting on the Prince of Wales' attendance at the Society's Anniversary General Meeting and the happenings on the occasion.
- 'Hotel Cecil Ltd., Suggested Menu for 50 Couverts', dated 6 March 1907 - probably an estimate for a dinner after the Anniversary General Meeting. Typed with printed letterhead
