Duncanson writes that he believes the study of Vietnam is "a mortification of the flesh" and that he is destined to pursue it indefinitely. He also writes that he is now working on his second book on Vietnam, which is more about the North than the South.

Phan Văn Tạo writes to Duncanson to let him know of their (Phan Văn Tạo and Quy Van Tao) arrival in Paris after having spent 6 weeks in a boat and in a refugee camp in Guam. Phan Văn Tạo also writes to say that Tuyen was among the last to leave, especially since many were surprised by the turn of events with the conflicts in Vietnam. Phan Văn Tạo is hopeful that, despite his change in circumstances, after some time he will see a clearer future for himself and his family. (Letter in French)
