Arberry, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Association of British Orientalists, to Societies and Institutions to seek their opinion on the proposal to constitute an International Federation of Orientalist Societies which is to be included in the Agenda of the forthcoming 22nd Congress. Opinions gathered will be used to affect any decision taken by the Association of British Orientalists regarding the project. Typed, dated 5 May 1951.

              The 26th International Congress of Orientalists was held in New Delhi in 1963. These papers concern preparatory organisation. They are:

              • Letter from the International Union of Orientalists to the Royal Asiatic Society to enclose the minutes of their meeting in Tokyo, October 1961, and the statutes of the Union. They ask for the Society's to remit their quota to enable the work towards the next Congress. Typed, dated 3 May 1962.
              • Letter from the International Union of Orientalists to the Royal Asiatic Society to follow up on their letter of 3 May as they had not yet received a reply from the Society. Typed, dated 3 July 1962.

              The 8th International Congress of Orientalists was held in Stockholm and Christiania in 1889. Material from this conference is:

              • "Menu du Diner Offert au VIII Congrès International des Orientalistes, Stockholm Le 7 Sept 1889" - Colour, printed pamphlet with a dinner menu in French, followed by poems in multiple languages and translations in either English, French or German, each dedicated to one of the courses.
              • Silver and enamelled drinking horn presented by the King of Sweden to the Congress. The horn bears the hallmark of J. Tostrup, and includes a detachable inner part containing an engraving noting this as a gift from the King and the names of the presidents of the Congress from 1892 to 1902. Stored in the original presentation case.
              • Note describing the drinking horn and quoting an extract from the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society 1902, when it was recorded that the horn should be kept at the Society.
              • Two copies of the pamphlet "Quousque Tandem? Der Achte Internationale Orientalisten-Congress: Und Der Neunte? Eine Zusammenstellung von Albr. Weber" - Printed in Berlin, 1891.

              • Draft letter to Professors A Dillmann and A [Knewen], Presidents of 5th and 6th Congresses and to inform them that places of honour are reserved for them on the organising committee as ex-presidents. Undated.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to send replies from Sir George Birdwood (not with letter) and to ask that the Minutes of the meeting not be entered in the book until sure no more corrections would be needed. Dated 20 June 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger concerning the contention between different groups regarding the Congress. Dated 22 June 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to enclose a letter from Birdwood to fix a meeting of Secretaries. He writes concerning the division of work among the Secretaries. He also asks concerning Minutes of the previous meeting which he deems was illegal but the items discussed can be put on agenda of a meeting that is legal. He also writes with his estimates for the cost of the Congress. Dated 29 June 1890.
              • Letter from L. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to ask him to ask Mr Douglas to return Sir George Birdwood's letter which had been sent by her husband. Dated 30 June 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to enclose a letter from Hewitt (not present) and one from Samuel Ball Platner (enclosed). He also writes about possible delegates and other administrative matters. Dated 6 July 1890. Samuel Bell Platner writes to suggest contacting the American Oriental Society. Dated 16 June 1890. Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to arrange the next meeting of the signatories. Dated 10 July 1890.
              • Two letters from Sir George Birdwood to Dr Bullinger concerning organising the forthcoming meeting and the work of the Secretaries. Dated 10 July-15 July 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to express his grievances concerning the division of work, proposed members of the committee and contravention of the rules. dated 14 July 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to state that he will try to attend the forthcoming meeting. Dated 19 July 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to send his corrections for the Minutes, to hope these Minutes would not be discussed at the forthcoming meeting of the Secretaries, and to send agenda items for the next Committee meeting. Dated 21 July 1890.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to state that the meeting held was illegal and his reasons for believing that. Dated 7 October 1890.
              • Letter from G.R. Badenoch to Sir George Birdwood to tender his resignation but will endeavour to promote the congress. dated 13 October 1890.
              • Letter from G.R. Badenoch to Dr Bullinger to ask for the subscriptions received for the 1891 Congress when they are now preparing for an 1892 Congress in opposition. Dated 14 November 1890. On the reverse is a copy of a proposed reply denying that the an opposing Congress had been started.
              • Letter from G.W. Leitner to Dr Bullinger concerning the prospect of Henry Rawlinson and Grant Duff retiring from the Committee and to enclose letters from Dillman and Birdwood (not present). Undated.
              • Letter from L. Leitner to Dr Bullinger to inform that Grant Duff had postponed the meeting. Undated.
              • Letter from Arthur [Chalk] to Dr Bullinger expressing his concerns regarding the Congress after the resignations of Sir Henry Rawlinson and Sir Grant Duff. Dated 17 November 1890.
              • Letter from G.R. Badenoch to Dr Bullinger to ask for him to reply to his letter of 14 November 1890. Dated 26 November 1890.
              • Letter from Dr H.W. Bellew to Dr Bullinger expressing his concern regarding tickets issued and his name being used without his consent. Dated 30 December 1890. On reverse is a copy of Bullinger's reply to express his surprise that Bellew had not given his consent. Dated 31 December 1890.
              • Letter from W [Maitir] Wood to Dr Bullinger expressing his concerns regarding the management of the Committee. Dated 10 January 1891.
              • Letter from Dr Bullinger to explain the reasons for some of the changes and to return the recipient's cheque. Dated 13 January 1891.
              • Letter from A. Weber, translated from National Zeitung, 7 March 1891 expressing his concerns regarding the 9th Congress of Orientalists.
              • Letter from Robert L. Douglas to state that from a note from Sir George Birdwood it would appear that Leitner had resigned and to ask the recipient to obtain any official papers from Leitner. Dated 19 June.
              • Translation of a letter from from the Vice-President of the Central Committee of Organisation of the Congress of Orientalists projected to be held in Seville Cordoba and Granada in September and October of 1892, to inform that due to the division of parties concerned with the Congress the Government of His Majesty in Spain withdraw their offer of support. Dated 29 January-6 February 1892.
              • Letter from W. Henry to Professor Rhys Davids to thank for the honour of invitation and to ask whether the international jury will proceed by mutual exchange of letters. Dated 5 November 1892.

              In 1926, the possibility of an International Congress was raised again. The material in this series consist mainly of correspondence between Émile Senart and Edward S.M. Perowne. They are:

              • Letter from Émile Senart to Edward Perowne concerning Senart's discussion with F.W. Thomas and the possible involvement of the Royal Asiatic Society. Handwritten in French, dated 23 October 1926.
              • "re Oriental Congress, Note of Interview with Mr Émile Senart at la Ferte Bernard, 2 November 1926" by Edward Perowne concerning Senart's suggestion for the restarting of the Congress of Orientalists. Typed, dated 30 October 1926 [Note, dates do not match].
              • "Translation of letter subsequently written by me from Paris to Mr Senart" by Edward Perowne, to clarify the points concerning the forming of an Oriental Congress. Typed, dated 5 November 1926.
              • Letter from Émile Senart to Edward Perowne in which he responds to the proposal laid out in Perowne's previous letter. Handwritten, dated 8 November 1926. With this letter is a typed translation made by Perowne. * Translation of a letter from Edward Perowne to Émile Senart in which he writes of his discussions with Mr Thomas and that the Royal Asiatic Society has yet to discuss their views regarding an Oriental Congress and to clarify points raised by Senart. Typed, dated 11 November 1926.
              • "Memorandum for a Meeting of the Entente Committee" sent out by F.W. Thomas to announce the meeting called to discuss a notice issued by the Dutch Oriental Society announcing its oriental congress in 1927 and the possibility of reviving the International Congress of Orientalists. Typed, dated 14 December 1926. With this memorandum are typed copies of the correspondence and meetings between Perowne and Senart for 2 November, 5 November, 8 November and 11 November 1926.
              • Letter from S.M. Edwardes, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Secretary, Oestersch Genootschap in Nederland, to relate the concerns of the Council of the Royal Asiatic Society concerning the procedure of reviving the International Oriental Congress. Typed, undated.

              The 19th International Congress of Orientalists was held in Rome in September 1935. The material from this Congress is:

              • "First Communication" from Dr Vittore Pisani, Secretary, Organising Committee, to inform of the date of the forthcoming Congress to be held in Rome from 23-29 September 1935. Typed with handwritten annotations, dated March 1935.
              • "Extract from Minutes of Council 11 April 1935" which states that Professor Margoliouth will represent the Society when the invitation comes for the Congress. Handwritten.
              • Letter from Henriette Devonshire to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that she has not yet made contact with Mrs Friend. She asks if she may consider herself a delegate from the Royal Asiatic Society at the forthcoming International Congress of Orientalists where she will be delivering a paper on The Upkeep of Islamic Monuments in Cairo. She asks for Hoysted to send an article from the Journal. Handwritten, dated 26 April 1935.
              • Letter from Col. Hoysted to Mrs. Devonshire to reply to her letter. He hopes she will meet Mrs Friend in the autumn, and that she must consider herself a delegate of the Royal Asiatic Society. He encloses an offprint of the journal article she requested. Typed, dated 7 May 1935.
              • Second Communication from Dr Vittore Pisani, Secretary, Organising Committee for the 19th International Congress of Orientalists, giving details of fees and transport suggestions. With the communication is a list of hotels and a form to order accommodation. Printed, dated May 1935.
              • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Secretary, XIX International Congress of Orientalists, to inform that the Council have appointed their President, Professor Margoliouth, as the official representative. Typed, dated 8 May 1935.
              • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Secretary, XIX International Congress of Orientalists, to thank for the Second communication and ask for the third communication and details. Typed, dated 12 June 1935.
              • Letter from Henriette Devonshire to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to ask for a further article to be sent to her. Handwritten, dated 25 June 1935.
              • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Secretary, XIX International Congress of Orientalists, to inform that other members of the Society will also be present at the conference including Mrs R.L. Devonshire. Typed, dated 9 July 1935.
              • Letter from Dr T de Somaggi to Col. Hoysted to write a report concerning the Congress of Rome as many English friends were unable to be present because of the Anglo-Italian political tension. Handwritten, dated 23 October 1935.
              • Lidzbarski Trust Medal presented to Nikolaus Rhodokanakis at the International Oriental Congress in Rome, 1935. The medal was presented at the conferences for work in epigraphy. Boxed medal with head, name and dates of Lidzabarski on front and inscription on reverse.
