Administrative history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

  • Letter from Simon Digby, Honorary Librarian, concerning a missing Mughal painting. Typed, 1 piece, dated 12 July 1973.
  • Correspondence, reports and photographs concerning the theft of three 18th or early 19th century Burmese Buddhist statues. Handwritten, typed, and 2 colour photographs, 13 pieces, dated 21 September 1977 - 25 April 1989.
  • Correspondence concerning missing books belonging to John Hansman. Typed, 5 pieces, dated 6 December - 31 December 1979.
  • Correspondence, reports and lists concerning stolen books discovered in 1997. Four archival folders, dated 1997-2009.
  • Report by Kathy Lazenbatt, Royal Asiatic Society Librarian, delivered to the Historic Libraries Forum, concerning theft. Typed, 4 pieces, dated 17 November 2009.
