The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Letter from Col. Hoysted, RAS Secretary, to Professor R.B. Mowat, to inform that his request for an extension on the time limit would be put before the Council on 12th March. Typed, dated 17 February 1936. With this letter is a note in Hoysted's handwriting to state that Professor Margoliouth had written to state that is was desirable to get good work for the Prize Essay and he therefore hoped that the Council could meet the candidate's wishes. Handwritten, dated 15 February 1936.
