Biographical history

Charles Elliott was born in London in 1776. He married Alicia Boileau in Calcutta in 1802 whilst working for the East india Company. He returned to London, living in Portland Place and was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society. He died in 1856. One of his sons, Rev Charles Boileau Elliott, became a well-known travel writer.

Archival history

This manuscript was found within a Pushto-Persian Dictionary which was donated by Charles Elliot in 1831 along with other manuscripts and the published travel diary of his son, Charles Boileau Elliott, Letters from the North of Europe. It is unknown whether these are Elliott's own notes or made by some other researcher.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

The manuscript was discovered within the Pashto-Persian Dictionary (RAS Persian MS 222) in 1983, by Simon Digby, Honorary Librarian.

Scope and content

"Introduction on the Elements of the Afghan language" which explains about the two divisions of Afghans and their languages, the different tribes in various locations. It consider the alphabet, vocabulary and grammar of the language. This manuscript is 13 pages on loose folded sheets.
