  • Letter from Secretary of the East India Company to Richard Clarke, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to send a communication to the Society to accompany a letter from Mr Frere, Commissioner of 'Sattara' giving an account of Arabic manuscripts in the 'City of Beejapore' as well as the building in which they are contained. Handwritten, 1 piece, dated 9 May 1850 (Mr Frere's letter is not with this one).
  • Letter from Secretary of the East India Company to Richard Clarke, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to acknowledge receipt of Clarke's letter and thank the Society for the accompanying 'Copy of a Persian Work by the Nawab Suraj ool Moolk'. The Society had also sent a memorandum from Dr Nicholson regarding remains recently discovered at 'the Ancient City of Vamilepoora in Gujerat' which the Company will forward to Bombay (Mumbai), 1 piece, handwritten, dated 21 May 1857.
  • Correspondence concerning the creation of a Professorship of Sanskrit at the University of Cambridge. These include three letters from John Muir to Edwin Norris, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, dated 19-23 July 1858; a memorial to the Rt. Honourable Lord Stanley, the Rt. Reverend the Lord Bishop of Chester and the Commissioners regarding the professorship, signed by several member of the Royal Asiatic Society, dated July 1858; and a letter from Edward A. Bunbury, Secretary, Cambridge University Commissioners, to inform that the matter would be brought under the consideration of the commissioners, dated 2 August 1858. All the correspondence is handwritten.
  • A letter from the Royal Asiatic Society to the University Commissioners regarding the desirability of making some provision for the teaching of the 'more recondite Dead Languages of the East'. The letter continues to explain which languages they consider important. Printed, 2 pieces, dated February 1878.
  • Report of the Committee appointed to consider the advisability of compiling a list of persons willing to give instruction in Oriental languages. The report is headed Royal Asiatic Society and details the results of a meeting held on 28 June 1905. The signatures are George A. Grierson, F.W. Thomas, J.F. Blumhardt, A.G. Ellis and J. Kennedy. In 1902 the Royal Asiatic Society hosted a reception and dinner, at the Whitehall Rooms, for the Indian Princes who had come to London for the coronation of Edward VII.

1905

  • Menu Card for the Dinner of the Heads of Departments of the London County Council, Torcadero Restaurant, Piccadilly Circus, 5 May 1905. It is uncertain whether the Royal Asiatic Society was represented at this dinner. The card is of interest because its owner added the list of wines that were served for each course.

1919-1920
In 1920 the Royal Asiatic Society moved premises from 22 Albemarle Street to 74 Grosvenor Street. There are two cards for associated events:

  • Notice of the final meeting at Albemarle Street with the presentation to Mr Henry Cousins of the Pinhay Memorial Medal, and the presentation of the Public School Gold Medal and Prizes, 11 November 1919, printed card.

In 1974, the Asiatic Society celebrated the 190th anniversary of its foundation. This material covers correspondence and printed material connected to these celebrations. These are:

Letter from B. Mukerji, President, Asiatic Society, to The Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform the Society that the Asiatic Society will be celebrating its 190th anniversary and the 150th birth anniversary of Raja Rajendra Lal Mitra, with an exhibition highlighting the career and achievements of Raja Rajendra Lal Mitra. Further there will be lectures and a reception graced by the presence of the Governor of West Bengal. The presence and greetings of the Royal Asiatic Society are requested. Letter from D. Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to the President, Asiatic Society, to write on behalf of the President and Council of their delight to send greetings on this occasion. She inquires as to the date of the celebrations. Typed, dated 21 January 1974.

In 1933, the Finnish Oriental Society celebrated its 50th anniversary. Connected to this are:

  • "Finno-Ugrian Society" - a printed invitation to send a representative to the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Society on 2 December 1933. Printed in Finnish, English, French and German.
  • Letter from Gerard Clauson to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, apologising for delaying his reply. He suggest that Tallqvist at Helsinki, Konow of Oslo or Karlgren of Goteborg might represent the Society if they are going. Handwritten, dated 25 November 1933.
  • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Sir Edward Maclagan to ask him to sign the enclosed and send by return of post. Handwritten with printed letterhead, dated 27 November 1933.
  • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Professor K.L. Tallqvist to ask that if he is going to the fiftieth anniversary celebrations would he be able to represent the Royal Asiatic Society. Typed, dated 27 November 1933.
  • Letter from Professor K.L. Tallqvist to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that his letter unfortunately had arrived after the celebrations but he has forwarded the Royal Asiatic Society's compliments to the Finno-Ougrian Society. Typed, dated 6 December 1933.
