'Extract of a Letter from Captain M. Kittoe, dated Benares (Varanasi) 8 Oct. 1847, addressed to Col. Sykes' in which he writes that James Prinseps has suggested that he support the Asiatic Society in Bengal, otherwise he would send his communications directly to the Royal Asiatic Society. He writes of the controversy as to whether Hindu or Buddhist archaeology in India has the greater antiquity and suggests both parties may be right, though he favours Buddhist as the more ancient. He writes that he is currently in Benares and of his explorations.

'Extract from a letter of Capt. M. Kittoe, addressed to Colonel Sykes, dated Chunar, 18 January 1848' in which he writes of his forthcoming journey during which he hopes to collect items for the Society's museum. Despite poor health he has been steadily making progress with the inscriptions and writes of some he has with him and his attempts at translation.

'Extract of a letter from Dr Atchison, addressed to Colonel Sykes, dated Peshawar, 26 February 1850' in which he supplements his previous letter (RAS GOV7/30) with information about the 'Koree' and Khyber passes, the Jhelum river, the area around Rawal Pindee, and other geographical features on his journey.

'Extract of a letter from Lt. Pollock addressed to Colonel Sykes, dated Kohut, 30 March 1850' in which he writes about the salt mines of 'Malgeen'. These are one day's march from a place called Nakbund where sulphur ore can be obtained. Pollock describes his journey to the area and how the mine is not regularly worked. He has sent specimens to Peshawar for further analysis as his geological knowledge is not sufficient.

'Extract from a Letter addressed to Col. Sykes by William A. Fallon Esq. dated Elephanta, 16 February 1852' in which he writes of sending into the Government a large painting of the altar piece at Elephanta on a canvas nearly 7 feet long and 2 feet 2 inches high. He also sent other plans and elevations drawn to scale. He writes that Lord Falkland is pleased with the painting.

The 9th International Congress of Orientalists was held in London in 1892. This material includes minute books, correspondence and printed material concerning the conference.

The 16th International Congress of Orientalists was held in Athens in 1912. The material consists of the Fifth Bulletin for the Congress detailing the Organising Committee, Programme and participants. This pamphlet has uncut pages.

At the International Congress held in Athens in 1912, it was proposed that the next Congress be held in Oxford in 1915. This was then postponed to September 1916. However the hostilities of World War One led to the discussion of the appropriateness of holding an International Congress. The material within this series consists of correspondence concerning that discussion. They are:

• "Extract from a letter from Professor Sylvain Lévi to Sir George Grierson, dated February 19th 1915" in which he writes of the difficulties of organising an international congress at that time and offers some alternatives.
• "Extract from a letter from Professor Sylvain Lévi to Sir George Grierson, dated 2 February 1916" and a note concerning Grierson's reply. The letter expresses Lévi's concerns and the possibility of a Congress with only allied nations involved.
• "Extract from a letter from Professor Sylvain Lévi to Sir George Grierson, dated April 1, 1916" in which he writes concerning the possibility for involvement of some organisations including the Royal Asiatic Society, the Pali Text Society, the Institut de France, the British Academy and the Royal Society.
• Letter from [Sir George Grierson] to potential attendees of a meeting fixed by Lord Reay of those being consulted about Sylvain Lévi's letters. Dated 10 May 1916. With this letter are copies of correspondence to Grierson from Professor T.W. Rhys Davids of Pali Text Society, Dr. J.F. Fleet, Dr F.W. Thomas, and F.E. Pargiter expressing their opinions, dated 22 March - 10 May 1916.

The 20th International Congress of Orientalists was held in Brussels in September 1938. The material connected to this congress is:

• Letter from Dr G. Ryckmans, Institut Orientaliste de l'Université de Louvain, to the Director of the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society to inform that the place of the forthcoming conference is likely to be in Brussels. Handwritten with printed letterhead, dated 17 December 1937.
• Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Dr. G. Ryckmans, Institut Orientaliste de l'Université de Louvain, to thank for his letter and warning about the 20th Congress and to state that he had cancelled the prepared statement for the Journal of the Society. Typed, dated 8 January 1938.
• "Première Circulaire" for the 20th Congress to state that it will be held in Brussels from 5-10 September 1938. Printed in French with handwritten annotations, dated January 1938.
• Letter from Jean Capart, Secretary-General, and L. de la Vallée Poussin, President, Organising Committee, to invite a delegate from the receiving organisation. Printed in French with handwritten annotations, dated 10 February 1938.
• "Deuxième Circulaire" for the 20th Congress giving administrative information and providing a form to subsribe to the "Bulletin D'Inscription". Printed in French, dated April 1938.
• "Troisième Circulaire" for the 20th Congress giving more detailed logistical information. Within the circular is a "Bulletin D'Inscription" form partially completed for Louise Wallace Hackney. Printed in French with handwritten annotations, dated June 1938.
• Letter from Louise Wallace Hackney to Colonel Hoysted to state that she had completed and sent a form previously. She is unsure where she will be staying for the Congress. Handwritten, dated 17 July 1938.
• Letter from Thomas Cook and Son Ltd., to Colonel Hoysted to send copies of an itinerary for arrangements for the 20th Congress. Typed, dated 20 July 1938. The itinerary is with the letter.
• Letter from Col. Hoysted to Thomas Cook and Sons Ltd. to thank for the details of their tour to Brussels for the International Congress. Typed, dated 21 July 1938.
• Letter from Thomas Cook and Son Ltd., to Colonel Hoysted to ask whether a venue and date for the next Congress had been decided at the Brussels conference. Typed, dated 21 September 1938.
