Despite the subtitle, the work reads as a continuous composition. On internal evidence dates from around 1862, i.e. 20 years after the beginning of his service in the Indian Army. It mentions his visit to America in 1860, but not his marriage or his diplomatic career which both began in 1861

Wrapped round this list is a letter which is a note from Joseph Hooker about being glad that he is in England. Hodgson has used the reverse to make notes regarding return of a book to Hooker in 1868.
