The first is addressed to someone [Dickens] who had felt himself insulted by Manning and the second is to a third party [Philip Dundas] concerning Mr Dickens' treatment of him. Possibly that both relate to the incident written about in TM/5/1 as TM/5/1 bear the name Dickens on its reverse. Undated. Handwritten 2 pieces, 2 sides.

Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland 1823- London, EnglandDraft of a letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Sir George MacGregor writing that he is pleased for the country's sake that Jung Bahadur's offer has been accepted. He writes of Jung Bahadur's high energy and talent, his knowledge of positions and his forthcomingness. He reminds MacGregor that Gorkhas eat in the early morning for the whole day so if he wants then to march at 7am, they must be roused at 4am. He advises MacGregor to be cheerful and kind and this will 'carry the Gorkhas'. Handwritten, 4 sides, dated 12 December 1857.
Hodgson Brian Houghton 1801-1894Draft of a letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to the Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society to send five sheets of drawings of Bonpa (Bon tradition, Tibetan religion) deities which were drawn by a mendicant friar on a visit to Darjeeling. He also send a copy of a Tibetan yantra which he writes the people of Tibet wear about their necks as charms. Hodgson writes that De Coros considered the Bonpas that oldest sect of Buddhism in Tibet and that the name lingers in the exorcist of certain tribes. Hodgson continues to write about the Bonpa and about Buddhism comparing and contrasting Tibetan forms with those of other parts of India. He comments on others' articles regarding Buddhism. There is postscript entitled "Addendum to 1st paper for JRAS" and a further NB regarding Tantrika Buddhism (unsure if part of the same correspondence). Handwritten, 4 pieces, 12 sides, dated 15 December 1860. This letter was printed in the JRAS 1861, pp.396-399 with the accompanying sheets of Bonpa deities.

Draft of a letter to the Editor of the Quarterly Review with an article concerning the publication of a pamphlet "Expostulations on the Iniquity of the present spy system" by Jacob Bray. The article attacks the author's knowledge particularly concerning spies in France during the Napoleonic conflict. The letter is signed D.L. but appears to be in Manning's hand. The pamphlet was published in 1818 which suggests the letter and article are of that date. Addressed to Mr Murray, bookseller, Albemarle Street, for the Editor of the Quarterly Review.
