There is a single letter from the Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society to John Pinches to ask them to cast a token Medal for Sir Richard Winstedt ready for the presentation on the 9th October. Typed letter, dated 9 September 1947. There is also a single sheet of paper with "Details of Sir Richard Winstedt's Triennial Gold Medal" which gives details of the inscription and a sketch of the design. This was probably created at a later date but is itself undated and therefore included here as relevant to this Series. Correspondence concerning the India Office Library. These are:

• Letter from D.T. Monteath, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him of the Committee set up under his chairmanship to decide what should be done with the building and contents of the India Office. He informs that the Society may present their views on the matter. He discusses the contents and the possible options for their disposal. Typed, dated 16 January 1948.
• Letter from J. Butt, Royal Central Asian Society, to Richard Winstedt, Royal Asiatic Society, writing about the letter from Monteath and sending a copy of the views from the Royal Central Asian Society. Typed, dated 6 February 1948. The report is with the letter.
• Letter from David Monteath, Commonwealth Relations Office, to R.E. Enthoven to thank for his letter concerning the future of the contents of the India Office. He assures that it is his intention to consult with the Royal Asiatic Society. He also seeks to answer Enthoven's specific question about the Records and Library. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 18 February 1948.
• Letter from L.D. Barnett, British Museum, to Richard Winstedt to thank him for showing the letters concerning the India Office and to express his opinion about them remaining in Britain. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 25 February 1948.
• Copy of a letter from the Chairman of Council, Royal Central Asian Society, to Sir David Monteath regarding the India Office contents. Typed, dated 29 February 1948.
• Letter from F.H. Brown, East India Association, to Mrs Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that their Council has given much time to considering the letter by Sir David Monteath and recommending the matter be brought before the Royal Asiatic Society's Council. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 3 March 1948. With this letter is one from the East India Association to Sir David Monteath expressing their views on his letter concerning the future of the India Office and its contents. Typed dated 17 February 1948.
• Letter from P.[Cally], headed "Disposal of the Library of the late India Office" expressing his opinion on the dispersal of the contents of the India Office. Handwritten, dated 14 March 1948.
• Letter from the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Sir David Monteath to send the recommendations of the Society regarding the contents of the India Office. Typed, dated 17 March 1948.

The 21st International Congress of Orientalists was held in Paris in July 1948. Material associated with this Congress is:

The Universities Essay Prize appeared to run with a different time schedule, the competition opening towards the end of 1948 and the prizewinner being notified in May 1949. The material in this series consists of some administrative correspondence and the prize-winning essay.

There is no material directly related to the conferment of the Medal. For this see Related Material. However there is a single letter from The Royal Society to Mrs M. Davis, Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society, to explain the position of the Royal Society concerning the conferment of Gold Medals post war. Typed letter with printed letterhead, dated 24 February 1948.

The prize-winning essay - "Anglo-Russian Rivalry in the Middle East, from 1856-1878" by "Herat", Essay written by James George Morrell, typed, 25 pages, dated March 1951. With the essay is note of Morrell's name and college with countersignature by his tutor. Handwritten, 1 side.

The 22nd International Congress of Orientalists was held in Istanbul in September 1951. The material associated with this Congress is:

• Letter from Professor A.J. Arberry, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Association of British Orientalists, to Societies and Institutions to seek their opinion on the proposal to constitute an International Federation of Orientalist Societies which is to be included in the Agenda of the forthcoming 22nd Congress. Opinions gathered will be used to affect any decision taken by the Association of British Orientalists regarding the project. Typed, dated 5 May 1951.
