Correspondence with Dr Reinhold Rost (1822–1896). Rost was a German orientalist, who worked for most of his life at St Augustine's Missionary College, Canterbury in England. Five letters of correspondence between Reinhold Rost and Brian Houghton Hodgson dating to the period, 1868-1873.

Letter from Dr Reinhold Rost to Brian Houghton Hodgson in which he writes that Mr Fergusson is grateful for Hodgson's suggestions and offer of assistance and has read the suggested articles with interest. In a postscript Rost informs Hodgson that he spent the evening with Monsieur P.E. Foucaux, editor and translator of Lalita Vistara, and his lady, and that he is an honest, unpretending scholar. Philippe Édouard Foucaux (1811 – 1894) was a French Tibetologist. He published the first Tibetan grammar in French and occupied the first chair of Tibetan studies in Europe. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 28 August 1868.

Hodgson used much of his time in both Nepal and Darjeeling in research, wanting to discover and understand about the architecture, languages, ethnography, religion, zoology and botany. He collected specimens and manuscripts, and had many drawings made, which he donated to many collections throughout Europe. He was also politically involved during his Residency in Nepal, and also later in England, when he continued to show an active interest in the Indian subcontinent, particularly regarding trade and vernacular education. These Personal Papers reflect these interests and are a record of much of his activity - Hodgson and his wives seemed to have a need to record all his successes. He was also a keen annotator of material, so that most of the printed material also bears his handwritten comments.

Letter from Dr Reinhold Rost to Brian Houghton Hodgson in which he thanks Hodgson for his timely letter and remarks that Mr Fergusson's Paper was only of a provisional nature and that Fergusson has since been working on a book on snake worship In India. He assures Hodgson that Fergusson will be pleased to know of Hodgon's pioneering work in the field. He also writes that he has made a list of Hodgons's contribution to English and Indian periodicals except those of the Bengal Asiatic Society Journal. He does not know when he will be able to finish the list and suggests lending the Index of the Journal to Hodgson to get the pages copied out. Handwritten, 2 sides, dated 20 August 1868.

Letter from Dr Reinhold Rost to Brian Houghton Hodgson in which he writes that there is only one man in Europe who could provide the translation into Tibetan that Hodgson requires - Rev H.A. Jäschke, a Moravian missionary. Handwritten, 1 sides dated 7 April 1873. Also accompanying envelope which Hodgson has annotated concerning the sender and subject matter.
