In 1974, the Society wished to confer the Gold Medal on Professor David Hawkes. However the correspondence in this series reveals that Professor Hawkes did not feel able to accept the honour and therefore the Medal was not given in 1974.

Letter from David Hawkes to E.H.S. Simmonds, President of Royal Asiatic Society, to express the great honour in being proposed as the Gold Medal recipient but that he feels unable to accept the medal as he is only partly through his work. He also does not want the distraction of preparing a lecture and therefore declines that opportunity too. Typed, dated 15 July 1974.
