In 1973 the Royal Asiatic Society celebrated its Sesquicentenary (150 years). The archival material includes Planning committee administration; material connected with the various events held, exhibitions put on and publications produced in celebration of the occasion; and material concerned with fundraising for the Society.

As part of the Sesquicentenary Celebrations the Royal Asiatic Society decided to host a series of National Days at approximately monthly intervals to highlight the countries in which the Society was particularly interested and with the hope of strengthening ties between various bodies interested in Asia. This material covers the organisation of these events.

Correspondence concerning the administration of the Japan Day. These are:

• Letter from B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society, to Dr Carmen Blacker to ask her to begin arrangements for a Japan Day, dated 20 January 1972.
• Letter from Dr Carmen Blacker to B.W. Robinson to inform him that she hadn't agreed to organise such a day, only to help, dated 25 January 1972.

• Letter from Sir Norman Brain, The Japan Society of London, to B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society to state that the Council of the Japan Society would be interested in pursuing the idea of a Japan Day, dated 12 August 1972.
• Letter from B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society, to Sir Norman Brain, The Japan Society of London, to suggest a tentative date for the Japan Day, dated 25 October 1972.
• Letter from E. Dobson, Honorary Secretary, Japan Society, to B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society, to inform that the suggested date was acceptable to the Japan Society, dated 5 December 1972.
• Letter from B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society, to E. Dobson, Honorary Secretary, Japan Society, to give a general outline of the expectations for the Japan day, dated 19 December 1972.
• Letter from Duncan Macfarlane, Vice Chairman, Japan Society, to Dr Carmen Blacker to state that Sir John Figgess had agreed to lecture, dated 5 March 1973.
• Letter from Dr Carmen Blacker to B.W. Robinson to inform him of Duncan Macfarlane's letter and to state that she had responded to him, dated 12 March 1973.
• Letter from B.W. Robinson, President of Asiatic Society, to Dr Carmen Blacker to thank her for her letter and to ask whether she can contact the Japanese Ladies' Society to see if they could be persuaded to provide refreshments, dated 29 March 1973.
• Letter from Dr Carmen Blacker to Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to provide the correct title for Sir John Figgiss' lecture and to enclose a copy of her latest letter to Duncan Macfarlane, dated 23 July 1973.
