In 1973 the Royal Asiatic Society celebrated its Sesquicentenary (150 years). The archival material includes Planning committee administration; material connected with the various events held, exhibitions put on and publications produced in celebration of the occasion; and material concerned with fundraising for the Society.

As part of the Sesquicentenary Celebrations the Royal Asiatic Society decided to host a series of National Days at approximately monthly intervals to highlight the countries in which the Society was particularly interested and with the hope of strengthening ties between various bodies interested in Asia. This material covers the organisation of these events.

Correspondence, attendance information and a copy of lecture given on the Afghanistan Day. These are:

• Letter from David W MacDowall, The Society for Afghan Studies, to David Bivar, Director, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that the date for the Afghan National Day was acceptable and to suggest Mr Peers Carter as the lecturer, dated 10 October 1973.
• Letter from David W MacDowall, The Society for Afghan Studies, to Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform her notices would be sent to his members concerning the Afghanistan Day, dated 25 October 1973.
• Letter from A.D.H. Bivar, Director, Royal Asiatic Society, to Mr Yusuf Samad, Embassy of Afghanistan, to invite him to attend the Afghanistan Day, dated 30 October 1973.
• Letter from Yusuf Samad, Embassy of Afghanistan, to A.D.H. Bivar, Director, Royal Asiatic Society, to accept the invitation, dated 2 November 1973.
• Copy of a telegram sent to Peers Carter from A.D.H. Bivar, Director, Royal Asiatic Society to inform of late changes in the programme, undated.
• Invitation and acceptance form for the Afghanistan Day, undated.
• Supplementary Programme for Afghanistan day, undated.
