The International Union of Orientalists was founded in September 1951 in Istanbul at the International Congress of Orientalists. It was renamed in 1973 as the International Union for Oriental and Asian Studies. This material covers the interaction of the Royal Asiatic Society with the Union in the time period 1951-1977.

Letter from Professor W. Norman Brown, University of Pennsylvania, to Sir Richard Winstedt, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to discuss points concerning the Oriental Congress and to send a report of the Joint Meeting of the American Oriental Society and Association for Asian Studies Committees concerning the International Congress of Orientalists, which took place in New York on 23 November 1962. The report is with the letter. On the reverse of the letter is a handwritten copy of the reply sent by Winstedt on 26 February 1963.
