The 11th International Oriental Congress was held in Paris in 1897. The papers consist of a printed pamphlet entiteld "The Eleventh International Oriental Congress" By Robert Needham Cust, LL.D.. It is a report of the congress extracted from "Linguistic and Oriental Essays" Series V, pp.993-1012, and was printed by Stephen Austin and Sons, Hertford in 1897.

The International Congress of Orientalists, initiated in Paris in 1873, was an international conference of Orientalists. It was later renamed as the International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa and then as the International Congress of Asian and North African Studies. This material covers the interaction of the Royal Asiatic Society with the Congress in the time period 1889 to 1993.

"Languages of the Indo-Chinese Peninsula and the Indian Archipelago" by R.N. Cust. Printed pamphlet produced by the Philological Society. Hodgson has written his own title on the front cover alongside Cust's inscription to him. Soft cover pamphlet, 38 pages, dated 1877.

Letter from Robert Cust to Brian Houghton Hodgson to send a handwritten copy of a paper published by the Conte Angelo de Gubernatis on Hodgson. Cust hopes that Hodgson would be able to understand this delightful paper. Handwritten, 1 side, dated 19 June 1883. Accompanying article, handwritten in Italian, 1 side, dated 10 June 1883.

Letter from Sir Robert Cust to Mrs Hodgson apologising for failing to comply with her request to send a photo, which he now encloses. He writes that he has sent off his review of Hodgson's book to The Academy and that the book is a great accomplishment. Handwritten, 4 sides, dated 10 February 1880.

Hodgson used much of his time in both Nepal and Darjeeling in research, wanting to discover and understand about the architecture, languages, ethnography, religion, zoology and botany. He collected specimens and manuscripts, and had many drawings made, which he donated to many collections throughout Europe. He was also politically involved during his Residency in Nepal, and also later in England, when he continued to show an active interest in the Indian subcontinent, particularly regarding trade and vernacular education. These Personal Papers reflect these interests and are a record of much of his activity - Hodgson and his wives seemed to have a need to record all his successes. He was also a keen annotator of material, so that most of the printed material also bears his handwritten comments.

This series contains published material written, by Brian Houghton Hodgson and others pertaining to his interest in Languages and Ethnography, which were present within his Papers. Many contain extensive annotations in Hodgson's hand.
