Material concerned with the Asiatic Society (formerly Asiatic Society of Bengal) and their interaction with the Royal Asiatic Society.

In 1984, the Asiatic Society celebrated its bicentenary. This material is concerned with the celebrations held in both Britain and India. These are:

Letter from the Director, Royal Asiatic Society, to John Burton-Page to ask if he would be the Society's contact to 'celebrate Sir William Jones in 1984'. Typed, dated 8 May 1978.

Letter from Garland Cannon, Professor of Linguistics, Texas A&M University, to Joan C. Lancaster, Director, India Office Library and Records, to respond to her suggestion of a London site for an International Symposium on the Bicentenary of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. With this letter are others of support to and from Allan H. Fry, American Society of Geolinguistics, and to Mr. Afgani, Cologne, Germany. All these letters are photocopies, dated 13 May - 30 May 1978.

Robins, Honorary Secretary, The Philological Society, to the Royal Asiatic Society to inquire regarding their plans to celebrate William Jones in 1984 as the Philological Society were considering a celebration in 1986 of 200 years since Jones' 'famous address to the Asiatick Society in 1786', dated 17 October 1983. These Papers of William (Bill) Roff relate mainly to his research interests in the Hajj pilgrimage particularly among pilgrims from Southeast Asia. The material consists of research notes, papers of Roff and others, and official documents.

Printed material collated by Raymond Head in researching the catalogue. These are:

• "Thai Manuscripts: An Exhibition in the British Library 23 January - 30 June 1983" - printed leaflet about the exhibition.

• "Britain and her Buffer States, David Mclean, Royal Historical Society, 1979". Photocopy of a page from the Proceedings of the Asiatic Society concerning the designs of the Allahabad column by Captain Edward Smith.

In 1998, the Royal Asiatic Society celebrated its 175th anniversary with an exhibition, "Persian and Indian Manuscripts and Paintings from the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society" at the British Museum, and a lecture, "The Book of Kings: The Juki Shahnama of the Royal Asiatic Society" by Dr Barbara Brend, held at the British Library. This material covers the planning, publicity and attendance at these events. Also in conjunction with the exhibition, the publication Persian Paintings in the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society by B.W. Robinson was published.

This archive consists of lists and correspondence concerned with the disposal of items in the Collections of the Society. The Society has not kept comprehensive records throughout its history. Further information pertaining to Disposals of the Society may be found in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society and in the Minute books for the Council and General Meetings. Disposals may continue in the life of the Society. More recent ones are held in the Society's records management system and will be transferred to the archive in due course.

The Sya'ir Mekka dan Medina is an early Malay account of the Hajj. This series contains Roff's notes concerning the manuscript copies of the account.
