Letter from Michael Loewe, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Cambridge, to Angus Graham to send an edited version of Graham's contribution to the Bibliography of Early Chinese Literature and to give some explanation for the delay.

From 1904-1929 the Royal Asiatic Society awarded a Gold Medal to a schoolboy writing on a chosen essay title. However, as entrants dwindled and few schools seemed interested in teaching Indian history, it was decided that the competition should be changed to one for undergraduate students. The change was finalised on 15th December 1931. Regulations for the University Prize Essay Fund were drawn up in 1932 and the first prize was awarded in 1933. In 1939, Professor Perceval Yetts designed a certificate to be presented with the prize (an example of this can be found in these papers). The prize was initially awarded annually but then became biennial. The prize money also increased at various intervals.
The records of the Universities Prize Essay cover the conversion from the Public School Medal to the Universities Prize Essay Fund, governance of the award and the conferment of the Honour in subsequent years. They include Rules, correspondence, and winning essays. However there are not records for all instances of the presentation of the award. Researchers are advised to also examine the Council Minutes and the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society (both held in the RAS Collections) when researching concerning the Universities Prize Essay and its recipients.

There are two items of correspondence between the members of the Selection Committee for the Essay Prize.

The Papers of Angus C. Graham include material pertaining to both book and article publications, to reviews written and to his translation, poetry and short story work. It includes correspondence with other academics in his field and with some poets. There is material pertaining to appointments that he has held and conferences attended, notebooks, diaries and a single photograph. There is also a considerable volume of others' articles and some material concerning others' academic appointments.

Letter from William Boltz and Michael Loewe concerning contributions to a handbook for the use of anyone embarking on research in the primary materials of the Chou and Han periods. They ask for agreement to contribute by 31 March 1980 and for contributions by 31 July 1980. With the letter is an example of work by Loewe.

Angus Graham wrote many articles throughout his career. This series contains material relating to his articles including drafts and correspondence.

Graham was asked to provide some entries for the Bibliography of Early Chinese Literature . This material consists of two letters concerning the publication.
