The collection features a range of material highlighting the activities of the Oriental Translation Fund both from its origins in 1828 and after being revived in 1888 by Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot.

The Papers include correspondence between Thomas Manning and his family, friends and some official correspondence ranging from his childhood, through Cambridge days, time in France, travels to China and India and his later life.These reflect both Manning's interests and the wide range of contacts that he cultivated.

There are also original notebooks and notes, some documenting his travels including his journey through Tibet; others reflecting his interests in mathematics, poetry & riddles and Catholic emancipation. There is also an early Manuscript for "The Journey of Thomas Manning to Lhasa".

Other highlights in the Collection include early English and European passports, calling cards, and later receipts

These Papers give an insight into this unique man formerly best known for his relationship with Charles Lamb. These Papers show that Manning was also a man of talent, charisma and determination in his study of China and the Chinese language.

The papers consist of two translations from Buddhist paintings. These are:

• Translation of the History of the Dharmapala Jataka which is painted in the Kaluwella Temple, 3 pages with descriptive note on the 4th.
• Translation of the [Sambaive] Jataka or the history of the "King Dannanjaya Cooraw-wa", also painted in the Kaluwella Temple, 7 pages with descriptive note on the 8th.

This collection contains correspondence between Abraham Poliak and the Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society (Diana Crawford), concerning the proposed reprint of Poliak's publication, Feudalism in Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and the Lebanon 1250-1900. This was originally published in 1939 funded by the Society's Prize Publication Fund.

Due to Poliak's death in 1970, the proposed reprint never came to fruition, The collection also contains three notebooks of draft amendments made by Poliak.

The papers of Charles Philip Brown consisting of three leather-bound volumes being a catalogue of Sanskrit manuscripts held in the the Madras College Manuscript Library comprising the author's collection; part of Colonel Mackenzie's collection; part of the East India House Library:

• Catalogues of Paper Volumes in Sanskrit, Teugu, Tamil, Marata, Malaysian in the Madras Library which are transcriptions of the originals on paper and bound as English books;
• Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts - originals in Telugu, Karnataca, Grandha, Devanagara, Malaya, Odhra, Bangla;
• Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts written on palm leaves and on paper.

Dent's Personal Papers consist of:

• "The Ascent of Tsiteli" - a Paper by C.T. Dent, read before the Alpine Club, June 1898.
• Manuscript Chapters on Climbing in the Caucasus.

These papers of Dennis Duncanson, dating from 1965 to 1976 are comprised of several manuscripts from his book, 'Government and Revolution in Vietnam ' (1968, OUP), as well as draft manuscripts from his other works. The collection also contains a variety of correspondence with academic organisations, personal friends, colleagues and professional acquaintances; review clippings of his book and newspaper cuttings on Vietnam.

"The Brahminical Mode of Computing Time and generally followed in all parts of Hindostan". A paper that was presented to the Royal Asiatic Society and read by Lieutenant-Colonel James Tod at the General Meeting of the Society on 21st July 1832, under the title of "Calculation of the Variation of the Measure of Time in India". The material is handwritten in ink with pencil annotations. Also with the paper is a comment upon the paper with criticisms of Haliburton's methods, dated 19 January 1833.

There is a single item in these Papers - this is a partial translation of Lubb ut-Tawarikh Hind undertaken by Prichard. This is a handwritten manuscript of 44 foolscap sides plus a front cover with the titles "Lubbu-t Táwáríkh Hind" "Translated by Lieut Prichard 15th N.I.", "See Catalogue No.202 From p 284 to 305". A different hand has added "(Khander)" and a further hand has made a comment about the text and the translation. The manuscript is incomplete.
