This series contains correspondence regarding Yumjao Singh's monograph and the donation of Pettigrew papers.

This sub-series contains correspondence between William Pettigrew and other individuals regarding Yumjao Singh's monograph on archaic Manipuri. The book was initiated by Pettigrew during his time in Manipur. After Pettigrew left Manipur for England in 1933, the work was continued by Yumjao Singh who had collaborated with Pettigrew on researching archaic Manipuri, with support from Christopher Gimson. Pettigrew agreed to offer criticism and suggestions to the book.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to William Pettigrew to say that when the manuscript arrives Yumjao Singh would get on with the work and return the manuscript to Pettigrew for criticism and suggestions. He further writes of the situation in Manipur. Handwritten, dated 15 March [1935].

Letter from Christopher Gimson to William Pettigrew, confirming receipt of papers from Kangpokpi. He writes that Yumjao Singh has found that some leaves are missing and asks Pettigrew to send those on if he has them. Typed, dated 23 October 1935.

Letter from William Pettigrew to Christopher Gimson to say that Yumjao Singh will have to look up other period of the Manipur Chronicles for his enquiry regarding Europeans visiting Mecklei, and that he doubts any relevant papers were sent to Manipur. He encloses some notes on the subject for Yumjao (with the letter). Typed, dated 11 November 1937.

He further writes about the issue of authorship of the book and that he agrees be made editor of the book. Typed, dated 27 December [1939].

Letter from Christopher Gimson to William Pettigrew enquiring about Manipuri-English dictionaries. He writes that he would be glad to help with producing such dictionaries and that he has in his possession a reprint of Captain Gordon's English-Bengali-Manipuri dictionary first printed in 1837. Typed, dated 16 November 1938.

Letter from William Pettigrew to Christopher Gimson to say that they are hard on copying out the material he has which he will send on when done. He writes that there is some material left at Kangpokpi which he has asked Dr Tuttle of Gauhati to locate for him and send it to Imphal directly. Typed, dated 2 July 1935.

Letter from William Pettigrew to Christopher Gimson, giving updates of his goods arriving from the US. He writes that he will send the material to him for Yumjao and that Yumjao can get on with the transliteration. He asks if the Assam government will share the expenses and hopes that the Darbar will be willing to help. Handwritten, dated 15 March [1935].
