The date of this inscription is the 4th century. The alphabet is Pallava rather than Gupta. Typed letter, 2 sides, dated 7 March 1939.

He asks if Wales chalked the inscription to make it reproduce more easily and whether that might account for the discrepancies. Typed letter, 1 side, dated 4 November 1938. With this letter is a copy of a reply by Quaritch Wales to say that he had used some white powder. However he will be bringing the inscription back at the end of January 1939.
