Burgess and whether the Librarian would xerox a passage. He also ask for a xerox from Buddha-Legends by R. Seydel and an article from East and West, 1967.
Sans titreLetter from J.D.M. Derrett to Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank him for sending the copy of the Fergusson and Burgess book and to ask for the address of the Warburg Institute where Pollock had found the Seydel reference.
Sans titreLetter from Michael Pollock, Royal Asiatic Society Librarian, to J. Duncan M. Derrett to thank for the return of the Fergusson and Burgess book and to send the photocopy of the required material from the Warburg Institute.
Sans titreLetter from J.D.M. Derrett to Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank him for the material from the Warburg Institute. Derrett comments on what he has learnt from the Fergusson and Burgess book concerning sculptures found in the village of Jamālgarhi including three distinctly Christian scenes. The sculptures had been on display in London in 1880 but have since disappeared. He also comments upon his theory of Christ being recognised as a Bodhisattva, and in a postscript mentions how Turner, Director of SOAS, had doubts about Derrett's 'powers'.
Sans titreLetter from J.D.M. Derrett to Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to express his continuing concern about the Christian sculptures, for although he has sent off the proofs for his forthcoming book, he may be able to make an addition if more information could be found. He therefore asks Pollock to look for The Gandhara Sculptures by J. Burgess in the Journal of Indian Art and Industry, 1900, H.C. Ackermann's Narrative Stone Reliefs and anything more he can find on these scenes.
Sans titreLetter from Michael Pollock, Royal Asiatic Society Librarian, to J. Duncan M. Derrett to reply that he has looked at the articles by Burgess in the Journal of Indian Art and Industry but can find no reference to Christian scenes. They do reference the Graeco-Roman style of some of the sculptures. He encloses a photocopy of some of the first article. He replies also that the Society does not have a copy of Ackermann's book on the Narrative stone reliefs in the V&A Museum, London.
Sans titreLetter from J.D.M. Derrett to Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank for his research and asks for him to send the rest of the first article. He also asks whether the Society has Grünwedel's Buddhistische Kunst in Indien, 1993 and a copy of Indian Antiquary, pp. 249ff. He writes that his second proofs for Bible and the Buddhists are due which will definitely be his last book published. In a postscript he asks for an article from the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.
Sans titreLetter from Michael Pollock, Royal Asiatic Society Librarian, to J. Duncan M. Derrett to send the requested photocopies from Indian Art and Industry, Indian Antiquary and the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He writes he is also sending by registered post, Albert Grünwedel's Buddhist Art in India, translated by Agnes C. Gibson.
